Additionally, Governor Sanwo-olu disclosed that from January 2025, that Lagos State would be paying N100,000 minimum wage, which represents a significant increase for Lagos State workers.

Some states have decided to surpass the Federal Government’s approved minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers.

In July 2024, President Bola Tinubu had approved N70K as minimum wage for Nigerian civil servants, with possibility of review every three years.

While several states enacted policy to implement this directive, some states decided to raise their minimum wage above the FG’s benchmark. However, it is instructive to note that prior to the FG’s approval, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, in June 2024 had led the way, approving a minimum wage of N70K for Edo civil servants.

As at today, the states complying with the minimum wage policy can be compartmentalized into three categories; those paying above N70K, those paying N70K and those yet to even pay the N70K.

The states paying above N70K are:
Lagos: N85K with promise to increase it to N100K with effect from January 2025.
Ogun: N77K.
Ondo: N73K.
Kogi: N72,500K.
Gombe: N71, 500K.

The States paying N70K already are; Adamawa, Borno, Ebonyi, Cross River, Edo, Ekiti and Delta.

Meanwhile, states like Bauchi, Enugu, Oyo and Sokoto, have announced the setting up of committees to ensure compliance with the new wage law implementation.

Curiously, there’s no indication yet, when States like Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Nasarawa and Zamfara would implement the minimum wage.
