APRI’s Head of Human Resources, Ijeoma Georgeben who made the call on behalf of the group in a statement, lamented that mothers have been the most affected by road crashes and urge them to rise and join hands in the efforts to curtail and prevent road crashes on Nigeria roads.

Ijeoma frowned at the attitude of mothers particularly the organized women societies such as the National Council of Women Society (NCWS) and others that should be speaking out for mothers, in view of the fact that they are the most affected in road crash deaths and injuries as they, in most cases, lose their bread winners and loved ones in such crashes, Ijeoma stated.

Commenting on the statistics of road crash deaths and injuries on Nigeria roads, Ijeoma advised that mothers should endeavour to caution their husbands and children that drive their vehicles to be road traffic safety conscious to avoid and prevent the escalating road crash carnage stressing that Nigeria is among the countries that signed towards implementing the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety with the aim to reduce road crashes by 50% from 2020 to 2030; adding that this objective will be difficult to achieve without mothers being involved in advocating for safer roads with zero road crash index.

The Head of Human Resources reminded Nigerian mothers that Nations globally just concluded in marking the 2024 World Remenbrance Day for Road Crash Victims where the carnage of road crashes and victims were emphasised without many women in participation in the event.

“This is not encouraging and a total departure from the global perception in road crash advocacy,” Ijeoma concluded.
