The National Association of Charcoal Producers, Dealers, Exporters, and Afforestation of Nigeria (NACPDEAN) was officially launched in Abuja on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, by the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, AMB. Nura Abba Rimi.

The launch event, held at the prestigious Nicon Luxury Hotel, brought together various commodities trading groups under one umbrella association, aiming to consolidate efforts and streamline operations in the charcoal industry.

In his address, the President of NACPDEAN, Mr. Babatunde Edu, outlined the timeline of the association’s formation and achievements over the past two years. He emphasized the successful mobilization and registration of NACPDEAN with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), which provides legal backing for their operations and facilitates their interface with the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment.

Mr. Edu highlighted the diverse uses and benefits of charcoal, noting its potential contribution to energy supply and revenue generation, which could significantly boost the national GDP.

In his speech, the National Director of Afforestation for the association, Mr. Stephen Adeoye, underscored the environmental importance of tree planting and afforestation programs to combat deforestation. He called on everyone involved in the charcoal business to support and register with NACPDEAN, emphasizing that membership offers access to interactive opportunities that can enhance their businesses.

Adeoye revealed that the association is actively working on establishing more tree plantations and nurseries across various states to improve environmental sustainability and plans to expand these programs further.

The launch event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on export expansion, representatives of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Comptroller General of Customs and Excise, the President of the Federation of Agricultural Commodities Association of Nigeria (FACAN), and Directors from the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, along with other stakeholders.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of registration certificates to 18 associations and a mini exhibition showcasing various types of charcoal, including those made from wood, sawdust, rice husk, palm kernel shell, coconut shell, and briquettes.
