The Nigerian Senate has granted swift approval for President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to the Republic of Benin, endorsing a regional peace mission to bolster stability following a foiled coup attempt against President Patrice Talon over the weekend.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the unanimous decision during Tuesday’s plenary after lawmakers deliberated in the Committee of the Whole, in line with Section 5(5) of the 1999 Constitution. The approval authorizes air and ground forces under Benin’s command to safeguard constitutional institutions and civilians, with a formal consent letter to be transmitted to Tinubu immediately.
Tinubu’s letter, dated December 8 and read by Akpabio, cited Nigeria’s “historic obligation” under ECOWAS frameworks to support Benin, emphasizing the urgency to prevent refugee influxes across shared borders and uphold democracy.

“It is our duty to provide the support as requested by the Government of the Republic of Benin,” Tinubu wrote, commending the Nigerian military’s “gallantry” in initial airstrikes that helped quash the plot.
The deployment targets cross-border threats along Seme and Jibia corridors, including armed groups linking Nigeria’s Northwest and North-Central regions.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin praised the action as “timely and necessary,” aligning with Nigeria’s ECOWAS leadership. However, activist Aisha Yesufu and the African Democratic Congress decried it as “unconstitutional overreach,” arguing prior Senate approval was needed under Section 5(4)(b).
Presidency spokesman Ajuri Ngelale defended: “This reinforces Nigeria’s role in sub-regional peace.” Benin’s Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude, vowing joint operations.
The Senate has seven days for formal ratification, but approval paves the way for immediate expansion of the mission.
