The Nigerian Society of Engineers speaking through its President, Engr. Margaret Oguntala, FNSE, has advocated the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure pipeline security and monitoring real-time.

In a keynote address at the at 2024 Nigerian International Pipeline Technology & Security Conference, Oguntala who was represented by the NSE Vice-President, Corporate Services, Engr. (Dr) Felicia Agubata, FNSE, highlighted the central role of pipelines in Nigeria’s Energy sector.

The conference, which gathered key shareholders from government, industry and academia, focused on the theme: pipeline critical Assets for National Economic Development and Environmental Sustainability. She emphasized the importance of real time monitoring systems, collective efforts among stakeholders, and investment in pipeline infrastructure.

Oguntala, who is the first female president of NSE, highlighted the advantages of pipeline management, they are not only good for energy transportation also, improved pipeline integrity, enhanced pipeline security, increased productivity, and reduced cost Pipeline play an important role in infrastructural project, healthcare, agriculture and education.

However, she also confirmed the problems facing pipeline operations in Nigeria, includes vandalism, leaks and oil theft, inadequate infrastructure, lack of capacity, and inadequate funding.

Oguntala’s recommendations aimed to promote the use of AI and other technologies to improve pipeline operations and reduce risks in Nigeria’s energy sector.
