The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, has expressed sadness over the death of a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Oluwole Oluwaseun.

The university said it received information about an emergency involving the student at an apartment in the Damico Area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife, at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

According to the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution’s Quick Response and Security Team immediately moved to the location after receiving the report.

The Nigeria Police Force was also contacted, and officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university’s security personnel at the scene.

The student was subsequently taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.

OAU said it has handed over relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police to assist with investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The university confirmed that the police have commenced investigation.

The university also notified the appropriate student affairs authorities to provide necessary follow-up and support, particularly for students who may have been affected by the incident.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to Oluwaseun’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues, while acknowledging the emotional impact the incident could have on members of the university community.

Management urged students and other members of the university community to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information or speculation while the investigation continues.

The university further encouraged students experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help from trusted individuals and appropriate university support structures.

OAU said further information would be communicated through official channels where necessary as the investigation progresses.
