In a seismic shift in Agege Local Government politics, Ganiu Obasa, son of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has been sworn in as the new council chairman following the abrupt resignation of Hon. Tunde Azeez (aka Disco), who quit after just 100 days in office citing health woes.

Azeez, 45, tendered his resignation letter on Monday, paving the way for Ganiu – who had been acting chairman during Azeez’s extended medical leave – to assume full control. The transition, formalized at a low-key ceremony at the Agege Secretariat, has ignited a firestorm of controversy, with party insiders accusing the Obasa family of orchestrating a “pre-planned” power grab.
Sources close to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos chapter told DDNewsOnline that Speaker Obasa initially pushed for Ganiu’s direct nomination as chairman but was rebuffed by party elders. Undeterred, Obasa allegedly backed Azeez – a loyal ally – for the top spot while slotting Ganiu as vice chairman. Azeez’s swift health sabbatical and resignation, insiders claim, was the “exit strategy” to elevate the Speaker’s son without breaching party rules.
“This was scripted from day one. Azeez was a placeholder,” one anonymous APC stalwart fumed. “Obasa’s influence in Agege is ironclad, but this smells of dynasty-building.”
Agege locals, weary of perennial flooding and waste woes, have praised Ganiu’s interim stint. “He’s cleared gutters faster than Egunjobi [previous chairman] ever did,” said trader Mama Aisha at Oke-Ira Market. “Roads look cleaner; no more open dumps.”
Ganiu, 32, a first-time elected official with a background in community development, promised continuity and innovation in his acceptance speech:
“Agege deserves better. We’ll deliver sanitation, youth empowerment, and transparent governance – no distractions.”
Yet, opposition voices from the PDP and Labour Party decry “nepotism.” PDP’s Taofeek Ajidahun warned: “One family can’t monopolize power. We’ll challenge this in court if needed.”

The move bolsters Obasa’s grip on Lagos Southwest, a key APC bastion ahead of 2027. But it risks alienating allies; Azeez’s camp hints at a “bitter fallout,” with whispers of defection to opposition ranks.
APC Lagos Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi congratulated Ganiu but urged unity: “Focus on service, not speculation.”
Lagos Reporters first broke the story; DDNewsOnline will track Agege’s next moves.
