Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has revealed that he immediately rushed to the hospital upon receiving reports of the fatal car crash involving British-Nigerian heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, December 29, 2025.
Speaking on the incident, Governor Abiodun said he personally monitored Joshua’s treatment alongside Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, ensuring the boxer received top-tier medical care after sustaining minor injuries in the crash that claimed the lives of two close associates: strength coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Kevin “Lateef” Ayodele.
“I was informed of the unfortunate incident involving our own Anthony Joshua, and I proceeded straight to the hospital to ensure he was stable and receiving the best possible attention,” Abiodun said in a statement released Tuesday. “We coordinated with Governor Sanwo-Olu, whose state shares the expressway, to provide seamless support, including security and medical resources.”

The governors’ joint presence underscored the interstate collaboration amid the tragedy on the notorious highway. Joshua, who has deep family ties to Sagamu in Ogun State, was stabilised and later discharged, with his management confirming he is “recovering well” but grieving his lost team members.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified investigations into the tyre burst cause, while calls for expressway upgrades continue amid public outrage over poor road conditions.
