Former presidential candidate and businessman, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has described the recent United States airstrikes on Islamic State (IS)-linked camps in northwest Nigeria as a “damning indictment” of the country’s security architecture under President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.
In a statement issued on Sunday, December 28, 2025, Olawepo-Hashim argued that Nigeria’s reliance on foreign military intervention highlights persistent governance failures that have allowed terrorist groups to gain ground, particularly in the North-West.
“The US intervention reflects growing international concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation,” he said, emphasising that Nigeria is “too large, too strategic, and too important to be allowed to fail.”
Olawepo-Hashim revealed that since 2021 and more urgently in the past year his team had warned of a dangerous trajectory in the region, including the potential emergence of an IS-aligned enclave without decisive action.
While acknowledging that the airstrikes, conducted on December 25 in Sokoto State with Nigerian approval, could temporarily degrade terrorist capabilities, he stressed: “External military actions require urgent internal reforms to yield lasting results.”
He questioned the APC government’s readiness for comprehensive reforms, warning that ongoing deficits threaten Nigeria’s democratic future.
The strikes, authorised by President Tinubu and based on Nigerian intelligence, targeted camps used by foreign ISIS elements planning attacks.

Olawepo-Hashim’s comments add to opposition criticism of the administration’s handling of insecurity, amid reports of mixed local reactions in affected communities.
