Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North) has called on President Bola Tinubu to issue an executive order directing the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, and all paramilitary agencies to procure uniforms exclusively from local textile manufacturers.

Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, the former Edo State governor described the current reliance on imported uniforms as “economic sabotage” and a missed opportunity to revive Nigeria’s ailing textile industry.

“With a single directive, Mr. President can channel over ₦70 billion spent yearly on foreign uniforms into Nigerian factories, create millions of jobs, and reduce the unemployment driving insecurity,” Oshiomhole said.

He identified Aba, Kano, Kaduna, and Onitsha as viable production hubs capable of meeting military-grade standards, provided they receive guaranteed government patronage and access to low-interest financing.

The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) welcomed the proposal, projecting that full adoption could generate at least 500,000 direct jobs within two years.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga told journalists that the recommendation is “under active review” by the Presidency.
