Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang is poised to dump the crisis-ridden Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), his Political Adviser Istifanus Nwansat revealed Monday, citing the opposition’s chaos as the key driver behind the impending switch.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Nwansat described the APC as the “option with the least risk,” adding that the move would align Plateau with President Bola Tinubu’s governance agenda for greater federal support.
“After careful assessment of all available options, we concluded that the safest decision for us today, with the least risk factor, is to move into the APC,” Nwansat stated. “The governor believes it is reasonable to align his people with Mr. President… Even as PDP members, we appreciate the efforts of the President in putting things right.”

The revelation caps months of speculation, rallies urging the defection, and internal APC resistance in Plateau despite national chairman Nentawe Yilwatda’s reported opposition.
Plateau APC factions, led by Yilwatda (Mutfwang’s 2023 rival), have rejected the idea, fearing dilution. Yet pro-defection groups like North-Central APC Forum and coalitions rallied in Jos, praising Mutfwang’s performance.
Mutfwang earlier dismissed rumours but acknowledged “pressure,” telling crowds only “God and the people” could sway him.
If completed, Mutfwang’s switch boosts APC to potentially 26 governors, dominating North-Central and weakening PDP ahead of polls. Analysts predict mass follower defections but warn of Plateau APC infighting.
PDP national leadership silent; APC yet to comment officially.
