Russia on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, said a Ukrainian attack involving nearly 400 drones sparked a fire at the major Baltic port of Ust-Luga in the country’s northwest, a day after Russia launched a record aerial assault on Ukraine that killed at least eight people.
Russia’s defence ministry claimed its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 389 Ukrainian drones overnight, mostly in border regions and around Moscow.

The attack triggered a fire at the Ust-Luga port, an important oil exporting hub on the Gulf of Finland near Russia’s border with Estonia. Regional governor Alexander Drozdenko said the blaze was “being brought under control,” with no casualties reported. He did not specify which part of the port was hit. The facility is a major hub for Russian fertilisers, oil, and coal exports.
Ukraine’s General Staff claimed responsibility, saying oil loading and unloading facilities were targeted.
This marks the second major Ukrainian strike on a Russian Baltic Sea port in recent days. Earlier this week, Ukraine hit the port of Primorsk, causing a large fire visible from satellite images.

A Ukrainian drone that strayed from Russian airspace hit a chimney at the Auvere power plant near Narva in Estonia, causing no injuries. Neighbouring Latvia also reported a drone entering its airspace from Russia, though no damage or casualties occurred.
Both Tallinn and Riga described the incidents as Ukrainian drones that had gone off course.
“This drone was not directed at us,” Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said on X, while Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina stated that Ukraine was “defending itself, and we must respond with understanding.”

The latest Ukrainian strikes came after Russia fired nearly 1,000 drones at Ukraine over a 24-hour period starting late Monday, killing at least eight people. The attacks hit the historic centre of Lviv and residential houses in western Ukraine during Tuesday evening rush hour.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky slammed Russia’s “absolute depravity” and vowed a strong response.
The escalation in drone and missile exchanges occurs as US-brokered talks between Moscow and Kyiv appear to have stalled amid the ongoing war in the Middle East.

Ukraine sent a delegation to the United States last weekend in a bid to revive negotiations, but the effort yielded no immediate breakthrough.
“Unfortunately, there is no real progress as yet,” Zelensky said on Tuesday after meeting with his negotiating team. “Russia does not want to move towards peace,” he added.
