Prominent opposition figures including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, David Mark, Dino Melaye, Rauf Aregbesola, Aisha Yesufu, and several other politicians and civil society activists on Wednesday staged a massive “Save Democracy” protest in front of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.

The protesters, many wearing “Operation Save Our Democracy” T-shirts and carrying red and white placards, demanded urgent action to protect democratic institutions and reverse what they described as attempts to undermine the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Some of the placards read: “INEC Chairman Amupitan must go”, “Hands off ADC”, and “Save Our Democracy”.
The protest comes just days after INEC reportedly discontinued recognition of the David Mark-led ADC leadership, a decision that has sparked widespread outrage within the opposition.

Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Kwankwaso were among the most visible leaders at the rally, addressing the crowd and calling for the immediate restoration of the recognised ADC leadership and respect for the will of the people.

The demonstrators accused certain elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using state institutions to destabilise the growing opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

David Mark, a former Senate President and current ADC leader, described the INEC decision as “a dangerous assault on multiparty democracy” and vowed that the opposition would not be silenced.

Aisha Yesufu and other civil society voices also joined the protest, warning that any attempt to manipulate the electoral process would be resisted by Nigerians.
Security was tight around the INEC headquarters, but the protest remained largely peaceful, with participants chanting slogans and demanding accountability from the electoral umpire.

This is a developing story. DDNewsOnline will provide updates as the protest continues.
