The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), has called on the people of Ogun West Senatorial District to close ranks, build internal unity, and work cohesively toward producing the next governor of Ogun State in 2027.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area on Tuesday, January 28, 2026, Bamidele described the governorship ambition of Ogun West as a legitimate and long-overdue aspiration, noting that the district has waited over 50 years (since the creation of Ogun State in 1976) to produce the state’s chief executive.
“Ogun West has contributed immensely to the growth and stability of Ogun State. Yet, for five decades, the zone has not had the opportunity to lead. This is not just about equity; it is about justice, fairness, and completing the rotation circle that has been the unwritten convention in Ogun politics,” Bamidele said.
He stressed that internal coherence is the single most important factor for success in 2027, warning that division, ego clashes, or multiple aspirants from the same zone could once again hand power to other senatorial districts.
“Unity is our strength. If Ogun West presents a fragmented front with too many aspirants pulling in different directions, we will lose again. Let us rally behind the most credible, most acceptable, and most prepared candidate from our zone. Internal consensus is key once we achieve that, the rest of the state will respect our collective decision,” the Senate Leader added.

Bamidele also appealed to other senatorial zones (Ogun Central and Ogun East) to support the zoning arrangement, describing it as a “gentleman’s agreement that has kept peace and stability in Ogun politics since 1979.”
The call has reignited discussions on zoning ahead of 2027, with several Ogun West leaders and aspirants already aligning behind the push for a governor from the district. Prominent names being mentioned include current and former lawmakers, technocrats, and business leaders from Yewa/Awori axis.
Political observers note that Ogun West’s unity will be tested in the coming months as aspirants begin consultations and party primaries approach.
