A wave of retirements is expected within the top echelon of the Nigeria Police Force following the recent change in leadership, with Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba and several other DIGs preparing to exit service.
The anticipated retirements come shortly after AIG Olatunji Disu was sworn in as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police (IGP) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, succeeding Kayode Egbetokun.

Sources at the Force Headquarters told DDNewsOnline that the affected DIGs had already begun moving personal belongings out of their offices in anticipation of retirement but were awaiting a formal signal from the new IGP or the Police Service Commission (PSC).
One senior officer said: “The DIGs are very ready to leave, but they are waiting for signals. Many of them had moved their belongings from their offices in anticipation of their retirement. Maybe when the AIGs slated for promotion come, they will leave.”

Another source confirmed that seven Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) are scheduled to appear before the Police Service Commission in Abuja on Friday, March 6, 2026, for promotion interviews/examinations to the rank of DIG. Their elevation would create vacancies at the DIG level and pave the way for the formal retirement of the current DIGs, including Frank Mba. PSC spokesman Torty Kalu neither confirmed nor denied the promotion exercise when contacted.
Profile of DIG Frank Mba DIG Frank Mba, one of the senior officers expected to retire, is a trained lawyer. He holds a law degree from the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002 after attending the Nigerian Law School, Abuja. He later earned a Master’s degree in Law (with distinction) from the University of Dundee, Scotland.
Mba has also attended high-level international programmes, including: FBI National Academy in Quantico, United States, Leadership courses at Harvard University and the University of Oxford.

During his career, he served as Commissioner of Police in Ogun State and as Commissioner of Police in charge of the Border Patrol Force at the Force Headquarters, among other key assignments.
The expected retirements and promotions reflect the standard practice of succession planning and cadre balancing within the Force following a change of Inspector-General. The new leadership under IGP Disu is expected to continue with reforms focused on professionalism, community policing, intelligence-led operations and internal discipline.

No official retirement date has been announced for DIG Mba or other affected officers. The Force Headquarters is yet to issue a formal statement on the matter.
