The funeral ceremony of the late Chief (Mrs) Florence Morenike Saraki, mother of former Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, who died at the age of 89 years, held in Lagos on July 18 and 19, 2024, and was attended by numerous friends and prominent figures from Nigeria’s political landscape.

However, the notable absence of two of Saraki’s key political allies, former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the last general election, and his running mate, immediate Delt State governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has sparked significant speculation and concern among observers.

The late Mrs. Saraki was a significant figure in Nigerian politics, both through her own contributions and the legacy of her husband. Her children’s prominence in politics underscores her influence, making the absence of such notable figures even more conspicuous.

Neither Atiku nor Okowa attended the funeral or sent representatives, a gesture many interpret as a potential rift within the PDP leadership. This absence was particularly striking given the high-profile presence of other political figures and dignitaries, including former vice president Namadi Sambo, current Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief of Staff to President Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi and former PDP Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.

Among the attendees were serving governors like Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, who hosted the event, and other governors including Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Johnson Adeleke of Osun State, and Muftwang of Plateau State. Former governors in attendance included Isah Yuguda, Chief James Ibori, Olusegun Osoba, Admiral Murtala Nyako, Rauf Aregbesola, Abdulaziz Yari, Udom Emmanuel, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Nyesom Wike.

Many diplomats, serving and former ministers made remarkable appearance during the event.

Business leaders like Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu, Aig-Imokhuede, Tayo Ayeni, Segun Agbaje, Kola Abiola and Ibrahim Abacha were also present, along with media personalities such as Dele Momodu and Bisi Olatilo, , reflecting the broad respect and connections the Saraki family holds.

The absence of Atiku and Okowa has fueled speculation about internal discord within the PDP, suggesting that alliances within the party may be shifting. This situation underscores the fluid nature of political relationships, where interests often outweigh long-standing associations.

The political implications of this absence are still speculative, but they suggest potential realignments within the PDP as the 2027 elections approach. Political observers will be keenly watching how these relationships evolve and what new alliances may form in response to this apparent strain.
