Nigerian music video director ThankGod Omori, popularly known as TG Omori, has opened up about the difficult health battle that kept him away from the creative scene, revealing that his first kidney transplant failed despite his brother donating a kidney to him.

Omori made the revelations during a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, published on September 23, 2026, where he spoke at length about his health, career and the period he spent away from the public eye.

According to the director, his health problems began with a diagnosis in Nigeria before his condition worsened in 2023 while he was in New York. He later returned to Nigeria for further treatment, and doctors eventually recommended a kidney transplant as his kidney function deteriorated.

Finding a suitable donor, however, became another challenge. Omori said his family spent about nine months searching for a compatible donor, with several willing donors ruled out because they were not suitable matches.

His brother eventually volunteered to donate one of his kidneys. The transplant was carried out in Lagos in August 2024, but after a surgery that lasted about seven hours, doctors discovered that the transplanted kidney was not functioning properly. Omori said there was no blood flow to the kidney and it had to be removed, forcing him to return to dialysis while he waited for another donor.

The experience also came with a heavy emotional burden. Omori recalled being in hospital while people online speculated that he had lost relevance because he was no longer releasing or directing projects.

He said he was fighting for his life at a time when people were already assuming that his career had declined. The prolonged absence also affected him creatively, as he watched other people’s work while being unable to bring his own ideas to life.

“I still stayed creative, but it was stuck in my head, and I couldn’t act on it,” Omori explained, describing the experience as similar to being an injured player watching from the bench.

After another period of waiting, his family eventually found a compatible donor, and the second transplant was successful, according to reports on the interview.

Beyond the health crisis, Omori also spoke about the financial reality of kidney treatment. He said dialysis at the private facility where he received treatment cost between ₦150,000 and ₦200,000 per session, with patients potentially needing three sessions a week. He estimated that a year of dialysis while waiting for a transplant could amount to about ₦31 million, excluding additional medical expenses.

The director’s account offers a different perspective on the period when he was largely absent from the music-video scene. Rather than stepping away from the industry by choice, he said he was dealing with a serious health crisis while trying to hold on to his creative identity.

Omori, who has directed videos for several major Nigerian artistes, also reflected on how fame, money and the pressures of the entertainment industry looked different to him after the experience.

His story has drawn renewed attention to the high cost of specialised medical care in Nigeria and the personal toll of prolonged health battles on public figures in the creative industry.
