The request, read on the Senate floor during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, seeks to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, last month amid controversy over his academic and NYSC certificates.

In the letter, Tinubu invoked Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution, stating:
“I am pleased to forward to the Senate the nomination of Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, for confirmation as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. While I hope that this request will receive the usual expeditious consideration of the Senate, please accept, distinguished Senate President and distinguished Senators, the assurances of my highest regards.”

Akpabio immediately referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further deliberation and screening, signaling a potential fast-tracked process. No specific screening date was announced, but sources indicate it could occur as early as next week.

Udeh, a legal heavyweight with expertise in justice administration, would become Enugu’s sole representative in Tinubu’s cabinet if confirmed, restoring the state’s federal presence.

Senate Minority Leader Simon David (PDP, Taraba) welcomed the nomination, calling Udeh “a seasoned jurist,” while APC senators praised the move as “timely inclusivity.”

If approved, Udeh would be sworn in shortly after, potentially assigned to a key portfolio like Justice or Innovation.
