Aptly called Travels and Thrills, the magazine featured the late Dr. Carmen Nibigira on the cover of the inaugural edition as a fitting tribute to her immense contributions to tourism, particularly in East Africa. Highlighting her legacy not only honors her memory but also educates readers about her significant work as the former Coordinator of the East African Tourism Platform (EATP).
Who’s Carmen?
“Carmen wasn’t just a boss — she was a mentor, and a true friend,” said Ms. Mwangi who worked at EATP with Dr. Nibigira and her predecessor.
“Working with her was transformative. Carmen’s unwavering passion for tourism wasn’t just something she spoke about; it was something she lived every single day. Her belief in the potential of East Africa to shine as a unified destination was infectious, and her drive to bring people together — across borders and differences — instilled in me a deeper sense of purpose.” Mwangi added.
The magazine is designed to be a quarterly format, with initial focus on digital distribution, aligns well with modern media consumption trends, especially for the travel-savvy audience across demographic patterns. Importantly, there’s provision for a print edition, an inclusive plan to cater to traditional readers and collectors who appreciate tactile media.

Omoniyi David, Chief executive officer of More Cream Than Coffee©, has described the debut edition of the magazine as a collector’s item, boasting its rich content which includes original materials from a panoply of industry writers and contributors.
According to David, the decision to feature Dr. Nibigira on the maiden cover of the magazine was a privilege and apt, saying he met her in Kampala, Uganda during the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) 2017, while she was Coordinator of the East African Tourism Platform. He disclosed that they heard of her death in November 2024, they immediately resolved to move the launch of the magazine to January 15, 2025, which would have been Nibigira’s 46th birthday, as a mark of evergreen recognition of her work in the continent’s tourism development.
