U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday, March 15, 2026, that the United States is currently in discussions with Iran to bring an end to the ongoing war, now in its third week, but claimed Tehran is “not ready” for a deal.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said:“Yes, we’re talking to them. But I don’t think they’re ready. But they are getting pretty close.”

He added that uncertainty surrounds who to negotiate with, given the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of senior officials in the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28, 2026.

Trump insisted, however, that “they want to make a deal badly,” while noting he was unsure if a settlement was desirable at this stage.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi swiftly rejected the claim in an interview aired on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday: “We are stable and strong enough. We are only defending our people. We don’t see any reason why we should talk with Americans, because we were talking with them when they decided to attack us. There is no good experience talking with Americans.”

Araghchi maintained that Iran’s military actions remain defensive and that Tehran has no interest in negotiations while under attack.

The war, now in its third week, began with U.S. and Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian leadership and military infrastructure. Iran has since launched missile and drone retaliations against U.S. diplomatic and military sites in Saudi Arabia (including the U.S. embassy in Riyadh), Bahrain, UAE, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait.

The conflict has disrupted global energy markets, with threats to close the Strait of Hormuz and repeated attacks on shipping and infrastructure.
Trump’s comments suggest behind-the-scenes contacts, despite public denials from Tehran. The U.S. State Department maintains a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for the Middle East, while global markets remain volatile amid fears of prolonged supply disruptions.
