President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Cuba, declaring that the island nation’s communist government “looks like it is ready to fall” in the wake of the U.S. military operation that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro last week.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, January 4, 2026, Trump said: “Cuba looks like it is ready to fall. I don’t know if they’re going to hold out, but Cuba now… their days are numbered, and our administration may turn its sights on the island nation next.”
The remarks come amid international backlash over the Maduro operation, which Trump authorised on January 5, 2026, leading to the Venezuelan president’s arrest on narco-terrorism charges. Maduro is set to appear in a New York federal court this week.
Trump’s comments have sparked speculation about expanded U.S. actions in Latin America, with some analysts interpreting them as a signal of potential military or economic pressure on Cuba, a longtime ally of Venezuela under Maduro’s regime.

The White House has not elaborated on specific plans, but Trump reiterated his administration’s stance against “socialist regimes” in the region, citing Cuba’s support for Maduro as a key concern.

This development adds to ongoing U.S.-Cuba frictions, including sanctions and accusations of human rights abuses.
