Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence announced on Friday, March 13, 2026, that a ballistic missile launched from Iran was intercepted and neutralised by NATO air and missile defence assets in Turkish airspace.

In an official statement, the ministry said: “A ballistic munition launched from Iran and entering Turkish airspace was neutralised by NATO air and missile defence assets deployed in the eastern Mediterranean.”

This marks the third confirmed interception of an Iranian ballistic missile over Turkish territory since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran began on February 28, 2026. The first occurred on March 4, and the second on Monday, March 7.

Hours before the ministry’s announcement, air raid sirens sounded at Incirlik Air Base a key NATO facility in Adana hosting U.S., Spanish and Polish troops at approximately 3:25 a.m. local time (0025 GMT). Residents in Adana posted videos showing a fast-moving, fiery object in the sky, according to local media including the Ekonomim business news website.

Sirens also blared in Batman province, around 600 km east of Incirlik, near a military drone base adjacent to the city’s airport, around 4:00 a.m.

Following Monday’s incident, the United States temporarily closed its consulate in Adana and urged all American citizens to leave southeastern Turkey immediately.

The Kurecik Radar Station in Malatya province operated by U.S. personnel as part of NATO’s ballistic missile defence system is believed to have played a key role in detection and tracking. Turkey has repeatedly denied that radar data from Kurecik has been shared with Israel to support strikes inside Iran.

On Tuesday, Turkey confirmed the deployment of a Patriot missile defence system in Malatya, describing it as part of NATO’s strengthened “alliance-wide ballistic missile defence posture.”

Iranian Denial Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, categorically denied that any missile had been fired from Iranian territory toward Turkey.

Turkey, a NATO member, has sought to balance its alliance commitments with its complex relations with Iran, while maintaining a firm stance against any violation of its airspace.
