The United States has strongly condemned the deadly attack on several communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, describing the incident as “barbaric” and calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

In a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja on Thursday, February 6, 2026, the American government expressed deep concern over the assault that targeted villages in the Baruten axis of Kaiama LGA late Tuesday night, leaving dozens dead, many injured, and hundreds displaced.

The U.S. said: “The United States condemns in the strongest terms the senseless killing of innocent civilians in Kaiama, Kwara State. These acts of violence against defenceless communities are unacceptable and must be met with swift justice. We stand in solidarity with the government and people of Nigeria as they work to bring those responsible to account and prevent further attacks.”

The statement also offered condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed U.S. support for Nigeria’s efforts to combat insecurity, including through intelligence sharing and capacity building for security forces.
Conflicting Casualty Figures Casualty numbers remain disputed:
Kwara State Government (official figure as of Wednesday): 12 killed, several injured, and over 200 houses razed.
Local community leaders & eyewitnesses: Claim over 30 dead, including women and children, with some bodies yet to be recovered from burnt homes.
Security sources (speaking anonymously): Estimate 18–25 fatalities, with the attackers suspected to be armed bandits or herder militias.

The attack reportedly began around 10:30 p.m. when gunmen on motorcycles invaded Woro, Nuku, and adjoining settlements, shooting indiscriminately, setting homes ablaze, and looting property before fleeing. Residents fled into nearby forests and neighbouring villages.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited the affected communities on Wednesday, promised immediate relief materials, and directed security agencies to hunt down the perpetrators.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the killings and ordered a full-scale military operation to restore calm and apprehend the attackers.

The Senate Committee on Security and Intelligence has called for an emergency briefing from security chiefs.

The incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks in the Kwara-Niger-Benue border axis, often attributed to farmer-herder clashes, banditry, and reprisal killings.

Security has been intensified in Kaiama and surrounding areas, with additional troops deployed to prevent reprisals.

This is a developing story with conflicting reports on casualty numbers.
