Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has thrown his full support behind House of Representatives member Kingsley Chinda as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.

Speaking with reporters during an inspection tour of major infrastructure projects in Abuja on Monday, Wike also revealed details of a secret political pact allegedly brokered by President Bola Tinubu that led to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s withdrawal from the race.

According to Wike, Fubara agreed to abandon his second-term ambition in exchange for the Rivers State House of Assembly dropping impeachment threats against him.
“In the first place, he ought not to have collected the form because the agreement was reached that the impeachment should be dropped, while he should also not talk about a second tenure,” Wike said.
“By collecting the form first, he didn’t show signs of gentlemanship… We thought that Mr President had been intervening severally and pleading with the legislature not to continue with impeachment.”

The minister, however, expressed confidence in Chinda’s emergence, describing him as a capable and experienced politician.
“A good product markets itself. Everybody knows that Kingsley Chinda is the material. He’s quite experienced. He has worked with the executive and now in the legislature,” Wike stated.

He added that Chinda’s political stature made him the natural choice for the APC ticket.

Wike made the remarks on what he described as one of his happiest days, having inspected several near-completed projects across the FCT, including the Renewed Hope City in Kassara, the Old Kedfi Road in Dei Dei, the Airport Road to Kuje corridor, and the City Gate project being executed by Julius Berger.

He singled out the City Gate project as a brainchild of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and praised Julius Berger for keeping to the delivery timeline.

The development is expected to further intensify the political crisis in Rivers State as different factions position themselves for the 2027 governorship race.
