Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised successive Nigerian administrations for repeatedly promising but failing to meaningfully complete the critical East-West Road, particularly the Bonny axis in Rivers State.

Speaking during his ongoing “thank you tour” in Rivers State on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, Wike described the project as a symbol of unfulfilled pledges to the Niger Delta region.

“The East-West Road, especially the Bonny section, is one project that every administration has promised the people but never delivered meaningfully,” Wike said. “It has remained a campaign tool, yet the suffering of our people continues.”

The former Rivers State governor, who has been vocal about infrastructure development, pledged renewed federal commitment under President Bola Tinubu to prioritise and complete the long-delayed road, which connects several oil-rich communities and facilitates economic activity in the South-South.

Wike’s comments come amid his efforts to rally support for Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda ahead of 2027, while highlighting his own administration’s legacy in road infrastructure during his tenure as governor.

Local stakeholders and residents have welcomed the renewed attention, expressing hope that the Bonny axis plagued by flooding, poor construction, and abandonment will finally be addressed.

The East-West Road, first conceived decades ago, has been a perennial issue in Niger Delta politics, with multiple contractors and funding challenges stalling progress.
