In a remarkable display of academic excellence and cultural adaptability, Miss Saka Aliyat, a Yoruba indigene from Osun State, has made history by emerging as the overall best graduating student at the Choice De Immaculate Demonstration School (CIDS) in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The 15th graduation and prize-giving ceremony, held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, saw the 15-year-old Class of 2025 valedictorian bag a staggering seven awards, including top honors in Igbo language a subject typically dominated by native speakers in the Igbo heartland as well as English, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Economics, and Marketing. Her triumph underscores the power of discipline, cultural immersion, and peer support in bridging ethnic divides through education.
Aliyat’s story is one of resilience and open-mindedness. Relocating from Osun to Anambra for her education, she immersed herself in the local Igbo culture, crediting her success in the language to “an open mind and commitment to understanding.” “Being a Yoruba girl in Anambra presented its own challenges, but I approached my studies with discipline and appreciation for the Igbo language and culture,” she shared during her valedictory speech, drawing applause from parents, teachers, and dignitaries.

The school’s Director, Solomy Ochokwu, praised Aliyat as a “beacon of unity,” noting her consistent top performance across sciences and humanities. “Saka’s excellence in Igbo, despite her Yoruba roots, exemplifies the inclusive spirit of CIDS. She has shown that hard work transcends boundaries,” Ochokwu said, advising the 2025 graduates to embrace “courage, resilience, integrity, and work ethics” as they venture into secondary school and beyond.
Aliyat’s awards included certificates, plaques, and cash prizes totaling over ₦500,000, sponsored by the school’s management and local philanthropists. Her family, beaming with pride, attributed her feat to early exposure to multilingualism at home and the school’s rigorous curriculum.

Educators and policymakers see Aliyat’s success as a model for Nigeria’s diverse classrooms. Anambra’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, congratulated her via a statement, urging other states to foster similar cross-cultural exchanges. “This is the Nigeria we envision where talent from Osun thrives in Anambra, and vice versa,” Chuma-Udeh said.
CIDS, a private demonstration school founded in 2010 with a focus on holistic education, boasts a 95% transition rate to top secondary institutions. Aliyat, who aspires to study medicine, plans to attend a federal unity school in Osun while continuing her Igbo studies.
