Nollywood actor-turned-politician, Yul Edochie, has stirred fresh political debate after stating that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, cannot become President of Nigeria “at this time.” Edochie made the assertion in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, where he dismissed Obi’s political prospects and his reported involvement in emerging opposition coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Edochie, Obi’s alleged alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is “dead on arrival” and unlikely to yield any meaningful political outcome.
“Any political party Peter Obi joins will scatter. Whatever he’s doing with ADC is dead on arrival. A total waste of time. It’s not a physical problem. It’s deeper than that,” he wrote.

The actor further suggested that Obi’s political influence is overrated, arguing that his participation in coalition-building efforts could weaken rather than strengthen opposition platforms seeking to challenge the ruling government. Edochie, a vocal supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has consistently used his social media platforms to express strong political views, often aligning with the policies and leadership of the current administration.

His latest comments have, however, generated mixed reactions online, with supporters of Obi pushing back against the claims, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. Critics argue that Obi remains a significant force in Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly among youth voters and urban populations, following his performance in the 2023 presidential election.

Political analysts note that early positioning and coalition talks ahead of 2027 are still fluid, and statements such as Edochie’s reflect the growing tension and competition among political actors as alignments begin to take shape.

As of the time of filing this report, Peter Obi has not issued any official response to Edochie’s remarks.
