A member representing Wukari/Ibi federal constituency, Danjuma Shiddi Usman has again decried the incessant detention of his Campaign Director-General, Samaila Yakubu, and some of his supporters.
Hon. Shiddi Usman, therefore, called on the Taraba State governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, immediately abandon his plans to gag the press.
The lawmaker, the Senatorial Candidate for Taraba South in the forthcoming general election, urged the governor to charge his supporters to Court rather than detain them without trial.
According to him, “the law should be allowed to take its course on the issue because Samaila Yakubu and three other APC supporters have been in prison more than four months without trial”.
Hon. Shiddi Usman also wondered why the Taraba State Police Command allowed itself to be a tool used by the state government to harass and intimidate opposition parties and called on the state government to ensure that justice is done for the people, saying that “they have been unlawfully incarcerated.”
The lawmaker, also alleged that there are ongoing plans by the State government to forward to the State House of Assembly a bill that would gag the press. He added that he would work tirelessly round the clock to frustrate the bill from seeing the light of day.
According to reports in Jalingo, the state capital, the DG to the lawmaker and some of his supporters are being detained in Gassol Local Government Correctional Centre for alleged offenses ranging from public disturbances to incitement.
However, the state government called on the public to desist from mixing politics with such arrests.
The government, through the commissioner for Information and Reorientation, Louis Emmanuel, alleged that the DG was nabbed following his involvement in “thuggery activities.”
