Speaking at a coalition event in Lagos, Atiku emphasized the need for a united opposition to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the administration’s failure to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
“Nigeria stands at a crossroads, tethering between decline and renewal,” Atiku said, addressing defectors from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP). “The APC has led us into economic hardship, insecurity, and division. The 2027 election is our chance to choose a path of progress, and I am ready to lead that charge.”

Atiku outlined why Tinubu must be unseated in 2027, pointing to several shortcomings of this administration in the areas of economic management, erosion of democratic tenets, diplomatic failures, insecurity and other challenges of development born out of sound policies together poor planning amidst generally credibility challenges, which are obvious to Nigerians, and indeed, the whole world.
Atiku promised that, in the coming days, the various issues that have resulted from poor governance by the Tinubu-led administration will be highlighted and frontally engaged in a national conversation about our future as a nation.

He said, “Nigerians are wallowing in abject poverty, with no meaningful effort from the government to ease their suffering,” while the national assembly that ought to be a veritable check against executive excesses has become “an appendage of presidential authority, failing to check the executive”. He warned of the seeming slide into dictatorship.
The former vice president pointed out some failures on the international front, saying, “once Africa’s giant, Nigeria is now an afterthought on the global stage,” a worrisome situation that he blamed Tinubu’s leadership that has led to even losing regional influence within ECOWAS region.
He further stated that the insecurity in the northern states and other entrenched sub-normal interests have exacerbated the fragile unity in the country, resulting in further divisions among the ethnic nationalities of the country. He argued that the administration’s policies have alienated key stakeholders, including northern voters who supported Tinubu in 2023.
Atiku, who was joined at the event by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and other notable opposition figures like Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, touted the ADC as a movement for national renewal. “This is not about personal ambition but about building a Nigeria that delivers for all,” he said, distancing himself from earlier remarks suggesting otherwise.
The former vice president, who lost to Tinubu in 2023, is optimistic that a united opposition and a shared national camaraderie of frustration and hardship everywhere would yield good fortunes to the rescue mission of ADC.
A Political analyst, Dare Glintstone Akinniyi predicted that Atiku, with Obi as a potential running mate, could secure strong northern support, leveraging the region’s dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s performance.
