The recent local government election in Rivers State, Nigeria, has concluded with the little-known Action Peoples Party (APP) securing a major victory, winning 22 out of 23 chairmanship seats. But in a significant political twist, Uzodinma Nwafor of the Action Alliance (AA) was declared the chairmanship winner in Etche Local Government, marking a rare upset.

The result of this local government election is seen as a reflection of the ongoing political rivalry between the former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, signposting a new political direction in Rivers State.

In a seeming turf battle for political supremacy, Wike has reportedly been trying to control the PDP structures in the state, leading Fubara to strategically back APP candidates for the local elections. This shift contributed to APP’s landslide victory, suggesting that Fubara’s influence is steadily growing.

Justice Adolphus Enebeli, the Chief Election Officer of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), praised voters for their peaceful participation despite isolated explosions during the voting process. He reaffirmed that the power of the ballot is stronger than any form of violence, underscoring the fairness and transparency of the elections.

He said: “We can see that Rivers people and residents in their overwhelming majority of opinion have given veracity of vindication to Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) avowed position to conduct a free, fair, credible, transparent, all-inclusive, violence-free, successful and treasured election by the Treasure Base of the Nation, Rivers State, without police or security agencies.”
