Nigerian Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed rumors alleging that his position, along with those of other principal officers, is under threat, branding these claims as “fake news.”

Addressing the Senate during a plenary session on Wednesday, Akpabio expressed his frustration with the spread of misinformation, particularly through online platforms and artificial intelligence-generated content. He emphasized that no discussions of impeachment had taken place, and the Senate was continuing its legislative duties without any internal crises.

“This is nothing but fake news,” he remarked. “The issue of impeachment involving principal officers never came up, and here we are conducting our legislative duties without any disputes or crises.”

Akpabio highlighted the growing challenge of false news in the digital age, cautioning that some media outlets and online sources are amplifying such baseless stories to generate traffic. He cited the use of AI in fabricating trending reports, speculating that the rumors concerning his position were already gaining significant traction.

“It seems some media outlets can now trigger AI-generated stories, causing false news to trend. I imagine the traffic for this particular fabrication is already high,” Akpabio added.

To address the situation, Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Special Duties to investigate the origin of the rumors. The Committee was tasked with reporting back to the full Senate within 24 hours, reflecting the Senate President’s commitment to swiftly curbing the spread of false information.
