The presidency has officially announced the passing of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died at the age of 56.
Lt. General Lagbaja, appointed in June 2023 by President Bola Tinubu, had been battling illness for some time, necessitating changes within the Nigerian Army’s leadership to address the gap caused by his incapacitation.

On Tuesday, President Tinubu promoted Olufemi Oluyede to the rank of Lieutenant General, designating him as Acting Chief of Army Staff to fill this leadership void.
Born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Osun State, Lt. General Lagbaja’s military career culminated in his role as the 27th Chief of Army Staff.
A statement from Bayo Onanuga confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos. The President expressed deep regret at the loss, offering condolences to his family and the military community.

“Announcement of the Passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, regrets to announce the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of the Army Staff, at age 56.
“He passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness. Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu,” a statement by Bayo Onanuga said.
