The Lagos State Police Command has declared human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore wanted for allegedly plotting to incite public disorder and obstruct major roads across the state, Commissioner of Police Olorundare Jimoh announced on Monday.

Addressing journalists at the Iyana-Oworo section of the Third Mainland Bridge, Jimoh revealed intelligence reports indicated Sowore and associates planned demonstrations at key sites, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park locations he warned could trigger severe traffic chaos and hardship for residents, Nigerians, and visitors.

“Sowore should surrender at the nearest police station or face arrest wherever he is found,” Jimoh stated, confirming 13 suspects had already been arrested in connection with the plot, while Sowore reportedly fled the scene before the operation.

The declaration follows Sowore’s involvement in a protest against the ongoing demolition of illegal structures in Oworonshoki, which police described as “illegal” but necessary for public safety. Officers fired teargas to disperse crowds during Monday’s anti-demolition rally.

In a post on X, Sowore reacted: “The Lagos Police Commissioner, Moshood Jimoh, has reportedly declared me ‘wanted’ for ‘disturbance of public peace’, allegedly as a result of his officers’ inability to execute a ‘shoot on sight’ order given by his illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun in Oworonshoki today. Despite my repeated attempts to contact… Commissioner Jimoh, he has not taken my calls; nevertheless, I plan to meet with him soon to address his declaration.”

This marks another clash for Sowore, who was arrested last week at the Federal High Court in Abuja over a #FreeNnamdiKanu protest and faces prior charges including cyberstalking and referring to Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun as an “illegal IGP.”

Human rights groups condemned the move, with lawyer Inibehe Effiong calling it “preposterous harassment.” Police reiterated commitment to maintaining order amid rising tensions from demolitions affecting waterways and setbacks.
