The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Sunday Abayomi Akande, has revealed that the Federal Government has released N1 billion to each federal university from a N30 billion special intervention fund aimed at promoting mechanised agriculture, enhancing food security, supporting student welfare, and empowering host communities.
Speaking during a media briefing on the university’s campus on Wednesday, January 29, 2026, Prof. Akande explained that the fund part of the Renewed Hope Agenda is designed to transform Nigerian universities into active contributors to national food production and self-sufficiency.
Key highlights from the VC’s disclosure:
Total Allocation: ₦30 billion disbursed across 30 federal universities (₦1 billion per institution).
Core Objectives: Acquisition of modern agricultural equipment (tractors, planters, harvesters, irrigation systems).
Establishment and expansion of university farms for large-scale crop and livestock production.
Research into high-yield, climate-resilient seeds and farming techniques.
Production of food to feed students at subsidized rates and supply excess to host communities.
Job creation for youths in host communities through farm labour and agribusiness training.
FUOYE’s Plan: The university will use its N1 billion to expand its 500-hectare farm, introduce mechanised cassava, maize, rice, and poultry production, set up a processing plant, and launch a student feeding programme that reduces costs while providing fresh, locally grown meals.
Prof. Akande said: “This is not just money for the university it is money for Nigeria. We will produce enough to feed our students, support host communities, generate revenue, create jobs, and contribute to national food security. This aligns perfectly with President Tinubu’s vision of making Nigeria self-sufficient in food production.”

The initiative has been welcomed by students, staff, and host communities in Oye-Ekiti, who say it will reduce food inflation on campus and create economic opportunities in the area.
The Federal Ministry of Education and the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) are overseeing implementation, with quarterly progress reports required from each institution.
