The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, successfully held its state congresses across 31 states of the federation, describing the exercise as largely peaceful, transparent and well-attended.
The congresses, which involved the election of new state executive committees, recorded massive participation of party members in most states, with only minor hitches reported in a few locations.

APC National Chairman, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, who monitored the exercise from the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, commended members for their commitment and discipline.
“This is a demonstration of the growing strength and unity within our great party. The successful conduct of these congresses across the majority of states shows that the APC is ready and well-positioned for the 2027 general elections,” Dr. Yilwatda said.

He particularly praised the high turnout, peaceful atmosphere and adherence to party guidelines in states like Lagos, Kano (where the congress was eventually held after initial hitches), Oyo, Kaduna, Enugu, and Anambra.
However, congresses could not hold in five states due to various internal disputes and boycotts.
Rivers State: Congress was suspended due to the lingering leadership crisis between factions loyal to Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Both sides boycotted the exercise, citing lack of inclusivity.
Kano State: The exercise was boycotted by a faction loyal to former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso following the recent defection of Governor Abba Yusuf to the APC. The two factions could not agree on delegates and congress committee members.
Osun State: Excluded due to the upcoming off-cycle governorship election. The party leadership decided to avoid any activity that could create tension during the election period.
Ekiti State: Also exempted for similar reasons as Osun to prevent any distraction ahead of sensitive political activities in the state.
Imo State: Congress was disrupted by a boycott from a powerful bloc loyal to former Governor Rochas Okorocha, who accused the state leadership of marginalisation and imposition. In these states, parallel or inconclusive exercises were reported in some local government areas, raising fears of further litigation.

Dr. Yilwatda added that the party would immediately begin the process of reconciliation in the affected states while fast-tracking preparations for the National Convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026.
The successful conduct of the state congresses is being viewed as a significant morale booster for the APC as it heads into the crucial 2027 election cycle.
