The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a strong public alert urging bank customers to safeguard their financial information amid rising cases of fraud and scams during Global Money Week 2026.
In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the apex bank emphasized that PINs, passwords, OTPs, account numbers, debit/credit card details, and other sensitive banking information should never be shared with anyone including individuals claiming to be bank officials, customer service representatives or security agents.

The CBN stated: “Protect your money by protecting your information. As we mark Global Money Week 2026, remember: your PINs, passwords, and banking details should never be shared with anyone, not even someone claiming to be from your bank. Stay alert. Stay safe.”
The warning highlights a common tactic used by fraudsters: impersonating bank staff through phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp messages, emails or social media to trick victims into disclosing credentials, which are then used to drain accounts or commit identity theft.
