The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Wednesday reserved judgment in an appeal filed by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, challenging the nullification of the party’s 2025 national convention. A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Lawal Garba, announced that a date for judgment would be communicated to all parties after counsel adopted their final written addresses.

The Turaki-led faction is seeking to overturn the March 9 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which upheld earlier rulings invalidating the PDP’s national convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025. The appellate court had affirmed two separate decisions of the Federal High Court in Abuja that nullified the convention and restrained the party from proceeding with the exercise pending compliance with relevant electoral laws.

At the Supreme Court, the appellants argued that the matter concerns internal party affairs and is therefore not justiciable, maintaining that due process was followed in organising the convention. However, lower courts had ruled otherwise, holding that the party failed to meet statutory requirements under the Electoral Act and the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

In one of the earlier judgments, Justice James Omotosho ruled that the PDP did not conduct valid state congresses as required by law and its constitution, thereby invalidating the convention. Similarly, Justice Peter Lifu restrained the party from holding the convention until it allowed Sule Lamido to participate in the national chairmanship contest, after finding that he had been unjustly excluded.

The legal battle stems from suits filed by aggrieved party members, including state executives from Imo, Abia, and the South-South zone, highlighting deep-seated internal divisions within the PDP. The outcome of the Supreme Court’s decision is expected to have significant implications for the party’s leadership structure and internal cohesion, especially as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Observers say the ruling could also clarify the extent to which courts can intervene in internal party matters, a recurring issue in Nigeria’s electoral jurisprudence. A date for judgment is expected to be communicated by the court in due course.
