President Donald Trump will travel to Beijing next month for a face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the White House confirmed on Tuesday. This will mark their first in-person encounter in nearly a decade and the first since Trump returned to office in January 2025.
The high-stakes summit is expected to focus on trade imbalances, technology restrictions, Taiwan, and broader global security issues as the world’s two largest economies seek to manage deepening tensions.

Trump and Xi last met in 2019 on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka. Since then, U.S.-China relations have been strained by a prolonged tariff war, U.S. export controls on advanced semiconductors, and rising tensions over the South China Sea and Taiwan.
Trump’s second term has brought renewed pressure on Beijing, including fresh tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, batteries, and solar components imposed in April. China responded with restrictions on critical mineral exports. Both sides have indicated willingness to engage in dialogue.

Key issues expected on the agenda include:
Trade Imbalances: Trump is likely to push for greater market access for U.S. agriculture and energy products, while seeking further reductions in China’s trade surplus with the United States.
Technology and AI: Discussions will centre on U.S. chip export controls and China’s drive for technological self-reliance. Washington wants assurances on AI safety and intellectual property protection.

Fentanyl and Climate: Both nations may announce working groups on fentanyl precursor chemicals and methane emission reductions.

The Beijing venue is seen as symbolically important, allowing Xi to project stability while giving Trump an opportunity to claim direct engagement with America’s primary strategic rival. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for the second week of November, ahead of the 2026 APEC Summit hosted by the United States.
Global markets reacted with cautious optimism. The yuan strengthened slightly, and U.S. futures edged higher on hopes of potential tariff relief, though analysts warned that expectations should remain modest.

“This is about re-establishing a baseline, not a breakthrough,” said Wendy Cutler of the Asia Society Policy Institute.
No major formal agreements are expected to be signed, but officials from both sides are working on a joint statement aimed at improving communication channels and crisis management mechanisms.
