The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has maintained 150 as the minimum Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) score for admission into Nigerian universities for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The decision was reached at the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions held in Abuja on Wensday, with vice-chancellors, rectors, provosts, and other key education stakeholders in attendance.

According to the approved benchmarks, known as National Minimum Tolerable UTME Scores:

Universities: 150

Polytechnics: 100

Colleges of Education: 100

Innovation Enterprise Institutions: 100

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, emphasised that these scores represent the absolute minimum institutions must not go below. However, universities and other tertiary institutions retain the autonomy to set higher cut-off marks for their programmes.

“The 150 is the line no one can cross downward. But if a university wants 200 as a general cut-off, or 280 for Medicine and Surgery, that is their prerogative,” Oloyede said. “We are balancing access with quality.”

He noted that competitive federal universities such as UNILAG, OAU, UI, and ABU have historically set departmental cut-offs ranging from 180 to 200, with professional courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering often demanding 250 and above.

Other key resolutions from the policy meeting include:

Age Limit: Candidates must be at least 16 years old for admission.

CAPS Mandatory: All admissions must be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). Any admission done outside CAPS is null and void.

Timeline: The 2026/2027 admission exercise is expected to be concluded by December 31, 2026.

Candidates are advised to regularly check the websites of their chosen institutions for specific departmental cut-off marks and Post-UTME requirements once admission processes begin.

Education stakeholders believe the 150 benchmark will help newer and private universities meet their admission quotas, while allowing top-tier institutions to maintain high academic standards through internal screening.
