Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Ekubo trained as a lawyer at the University of Calabar and was called to the Nigerian Bar. However, after finishing as first runner-up at the 2010 Mr. Nigeria pageant, he made a bold career switch into entertainment — a decision that would eventually make him one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces.
Over a career spanning more than a decade, Ekubo featured in over 100 films. He gained widespread popularity with his role in Weekend Getaway (2012) and went on to star in box-office hits such as Lagos Cougars, Your Excellency, A Man for the Weekend, Zero Hour, and Bling Lagosians. Known for his charm, versatility, and commanding screen presence, he effortlessly moved between romantic leads, comic roles, and political dramas. His cross-border appeal also saw him work extensively in Ghanaian productions.

Ekubo earned multiple nominations at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) and Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). He won Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2013 Best of Nollywood Awards.
Beyond acting, Ekubo was admired for his openness about mental health and grief, especially after the loss of his mother in 2021. He used his platform to advocate for therapy and emotional vulnerability among men — a rare but impactful stance in the industry. He was also actively involved in youth mentorship and health awareness campaigns, while becoming a red-carpet favourite and brand ambassador for several major companies.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) described his passing as the loss of “a gentle giant and consummate professional” who mentored younger talents and pushed for better working conditions in Nollywood. Tributes have continued to pour in from stars including Rita Dominic, Funke Akindele, Adesua Etomi, and many others across the African film industry.
At just 40, Alex Ekubo leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of the actors who helped elevate Nollywood from its video-era roots to a globally respected industry. He is survived by his father and siblings. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
