Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has hit back at Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke (Davido) after the singer publicly insulted him for criticising his decision to highlight the plight of abducted schoolchildren at a global FIFA World Cup countdown concert.
The exchange escalated after Davido wore a custom jacket bearing the names of over 40 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State during his performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 countdown event in Los Angeles. The jacket also carried the message “Bring Them Home.”

Omokri had criticised the move, arguing that spotlighting terrorists on such a high-profile international platform gives them unwanted publicity.
In response, Davido posted a video of Omokri on his Instagram with the caption: “UMU BINGO @renoomokri fowl.”
In a strongly worded statement posted on his social media on Tuesday, Omokri expressed disappointment at the “vulgar” language used against him by the international celebrity.

“Dear Mr. David Adeleke AKA @Davido, Thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response… Most shocking is your insult. You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of. Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you,” Omokri wrote.
Omokri maintained his earlier position, stating that while Davido’s intention might be good, the effect of giving publicity to bandits and terrorists at a global event could help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds.

He drew parallels with the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, noting that intense global publicity from the #BringBackOurGirls campaign allegedly complicated rescue efforts and boosted Boko Haram’s recruitment and funding.
Citing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s famous quote, Omokri declared:
“Publicity is the oxygen of terrorism.”
He also referenced UNESCO guidelines advising journalists and public figures against granting undue publicity to terrorist groups.

The disagreement highlights the ongoing national debate on how best to advocate for victims of kidnapping and banditry without inadvertently empowering the perpetrators.
Omokri concluded his statement by urging Davido to understand his point of view.
As of the time of this report, Davido is yet to respond to Omokri’s latest statement.
DDNews will continue to monitor developments in this unfolding exchange.
