The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially complied with the Supreme Court judgment on the leadership crisis in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), restoring Prof. Sadid Umar Abubakar Gombe as the duly recognised National Chairman of the party.
The electoral body, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, removed the name of former chairman Shehu Musa Gabam and other previously listed officials from its records, fully aligning with the apex court’s ruling on the long-running internal leadership dispute.

The development brings to a close months of controversy and conflicting interpretations of court orders that had affected the party’s national structure.
With Prof. Gombe now uploaded as the authentic National Chairman on INEC’s records, the commission has reaffirmed its commitment to respecting judicial pronouncements and upholding the autonomy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.

Party officials described the resolution as a major turning point that stabilises the SDP and places it on a stronger institutional footing ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP commended INEC for the timely correction and described it as “an important affirmation of the rule of law.”

The party expressed confidence that the leadership resolution will enable it to focus fully on its political agenda and national outreach, particularly around its presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, whom it presented as a credible alternative for national renewal.
The SDP reiterated its commitment to addressing key national challenges such as poverty, insecurity, and poor governance through policies rooted in constitutional principles, especially Chapter 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

It also urged INEC to maintain a consistent neutral stance in internal party matters and to continue respecting judicial decisions in future disputes.
Party leaders believe the development represents a victory for internal democracy and a reinforcement of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
With the leadership question now settled, the SDP says it is repositioning to strengthen its national structure, expand its political base, and prepare for a serious contest in the 2027 general elections.
