The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has exempted its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, from signing the party’s mandatory anti-defection oath, even as the requirement remains compulsory for all other candidates seeking elective offices on its platform.
The anti-defection policy, introduced by the party leadership, requires candidates to sign indemnity forms and sworn affidavits pledging not to defect to another political party after winning elections. The measure is aimed at strengthening party discipline, promoting loyalty, and curbing the rampant defections that have plagued several political parties in recent years.

However, the decision to grant immunity to the presidential ticket has sparked discussions within political circles. While the NDC insists the policy remains binding on candidates contesting for governorship, legislative, and other positions, questions have been raised over why the top ticket was exempted.
Party sources say the exemption reflects the confidence reposed in Obi and Kwankwaso, describing them as committed leaders who do not need additional legal instruments to guarantee their loyalty.

The development is expected to generate further debate among party members and political observers, with some arguing that a policy designed to enforce commitment and discipline should apply equally to all candidates, irrespective of their status.
The NDC’s anti-defection initiative comes at a time of intense political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as many stakeholders continue to express concern over elected officials abandoning the parties that sponsored them after securing victory.
