The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a convicted Boko Haram member, Alkali Yarima (also known as La’ari), to death by hanging for his active participation in the deadly attacks on Maiduguri in 2015.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Friday after a full trial, convicting the terrorist on a seven-count amended charge bordering on terrorism-related offences.
Sentences Handed Down:
Count 1 (Membership of proscribed Boko Haram terrorist group): 35 years imprisonment
Count 6 (Receiving training on arms and weapon handling in preparation for terrorism): Life imprisonment
Count 7 (Participation in the 2015 Maiduguri attacks): Death by hanging
Counts 2, 3 & 4: 10 years imprisonment each
Count 5: 30 years imprisonment

The Federal Government, led by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, prosecuted the case. The trial, which was initially slated for Kainji in Niger State, was moved to Abuja for security reasons.

In the charge, Yarima (chest number 1636 from Lawanti area, Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State) was accused of professing membership of Boko Haram between 2009 and 2015, accepting “Da’awah” from the group’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, and participating in terrorist attacks on Maiduguri.

He was also found guilty of travelling to an Arab country to receive training on arms and weapon handling in preparation for acts of terrorism.

The AGF described the conviction as part of the government’s relentless commitment to eradicating terrorism from Nigeria.
“We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that we make Nigeria a safe place for everybody,” Fagbemi stated after the judgment.

The sentencing of Yarima is being viewed as a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against Boko Haram and its splinter groups, reinforcing the message that perpetrators of terrorism will face severe consequences under the law.
