Former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm over what he described as renewed efforts by elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to bar his party from participating in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku claimed he received credible intelligence indicating a “coordinated onslaught” aimed at using political, legal, and administrative tactics to keep the ADC off the ballot.
“We are fully aware of their plots,” Atiku said. “While they seek to sow confusion within the opposition, we know their real target is the ADC because it represents the most credible alternative. If the APC is truly confident in its popularity, why is it so terrified of the ADC?”

The former Vice President pointed to a pattern of alleged interference, including frivolous litigations, selective deployment of administrative powers, and pressure on supposedly neutral institutions. He accused the ruling establishment of prioritizing political survival over addressing pressing national issues such as hunger, inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and declining purchasing power.
Atiku warned that any move to prevent the ADC from full participation would constitute “one of the gravest assaults on Nigeria’s constitutional democracy” since the return to civilian rule. “The ballot is sacred, and every attempt to tamper with it is an attack on the Republic itself,” he declared.

He urged the judiciary to uphold its constitutional oath and resist external pressure, while calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, civil society, and the diplomatic community to remain vigilant in safeguarding the electoral process.
Atiku emphasized the need for public engagement, stating: “We are placing Nigerians on notice because democracy flourishes only when citizens refuse to be indifferent. Eternal vigilance remains the price of liberty.”

Atiku emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate following the party’s primary election in May 2026. The ADC has faced significant internal leadership disputes and legal challenges in recent months, including a Federal High Court ruling in mid-June that ordered the deregistration of the party and four others for allegedly failing constitutional performance thresholds. That judgment was subsequently stayed by the Court of Appeal.
INEC continues to list the ADC among registered political parties, though factional issues and compliance matters remain points of contention ahead of the 2027 polls.

The APC is yet to issue an official response to Atiku’s latest allegations as of the time of this report.
This development underscores the heightened political tensions as Nigeria prepares for the next general elections, with opposition parties increasingly voicing concerns over the integrity of the democratic process.
