The Federal Government has announced the official unveiling of the Digital National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), a new national digital platform designed to resolve long-standing issues of fragmented and unreliable education data across Nigeria.

The platform will be launched on Wednesday alongside the Public DNEMIS Portal and the inauguration of DNEMIS State Implementation Teams.

Announcing the development at a pre-event media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Mr. Adebayo Onigbanjo, National Project Coordinator of the Special Programmes Operations and Implementation Unit in the Office of the Minister of Education, described the initiative as a major step toward evidence-based planning and improved service delivery in the education sector.
“For many years, education planning and administration relied on fragmented systems, inconsistent reporting structures and limited access to reliable and timely data,” Onigbanjo said. “These challenges constrained effective planning, weakened accountability and limited the sector’s ability to respond to emerging realities.”

He explained that DNEMIS forms a flagship component of the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI), a national framework developed by the Federal Ministry of Education to coordinate, standardize, and strengthen education data management at all levels.

The platform is expected to create a unified national database that captures information on every learner, teacher, school, and public investment in education. It will support key functions including planning, budgeting, policymaking, monitoring, and service delivery.

Onigbanjo emphasised that the reform underscores the government’s commitment to data-driven governance. “Data is no longer a back-office function. It is becoming the engine of education reform in Nigeria,” he added.

Also speaking at the briefing, Miss Mojoyin Adebajo, Special Assistant to the Minister of Education on Digital Communications and E-Learning, revealed that DNEMIS was built on the globally recognised District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) platform.

The system will digitise the Annual School Census, moving away from manual processes to a more integrated and efficient digital framework. It is expected to generate up-to-date information on schools, learners, teachers, and infrastructure for better resource allocation and programme monitoring.

A key highlight of the initiative is the Public DNEMIS Portal, which will make selected official education data publicly accessible for the first time to researchers, journalists, development partners, civil society organisations, policymakers, and the general public.
“This represents an important step toward expanding access to information and encouraging broader participation in conversations that shape the future of education in Nigeria,” Adebajo said.

The development received technical support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the University of Oslo.

Nigeria’s education sector has historically grappled with weak data systems, relying on manual collection methods and disparate reporting channels. These gaps have hampered effective teacher deployment, infrastructure planning, budgeting, and overall sector performance.

Education stakeholders have long advocated for a centralised national database to enhance transparency, accountability, and coordination between federal and state governments.

DNEMIS is expected to play a central role in the ongoing Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative led by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa.

Further details about the Wednesday launch are expected to be released by the ministry.
