- Nigeria Destroys Seized Illicit Arms In Major Security Crackdown
Nigeria’s arms control agency destroyed thousands of illicit, obsolete and decommissioned weapons in a public exercise. The agency chief said the destruction was to prevent the weapons from re-entering circulation. Officials noted that tens of thousands of illicit arms have been seized since the agency was established to curb banditry, kidnappings, insurgency and communal violence across the country. - FG Says Subsidy Savings Absorbed By Debt Costs And Higher Government Spending
The Finance Minister told stakeholders at the African Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja that savings from fuel subsidy removal and FX reforms have largely gone into debt servicing and increased expenditure. He explained that borrowing rates have risen significantly since the reforms, while the government wage bill nearly doubled after the new minimum wage took effect. The government also highlighted increased spending on education loans for over a million students. - President Tinubu Approves Expansion Of The Nigerian Army
The Presidency announced approval for the army to expand to more divisions with thousands of new recruits. Four new divisions will be sited in central and southern parts of the country. The government said the expansion, to be implemented in phases, will improve operational readiness, equipment and troop welfare as Nigeria tackles insurgency, banditry and other security threats. - Gunmen Attack Village In Benue State, Several Killed
At least a dozen villagers were killed and others injured in an attack in Efeyi village, Otukpo area. The local council chairman blamed the attack on armed militia and said similar incidents have occurred in nearby communities in recent days.
