Former Nigerian Ambassador to Zambia and Malawi, Ambassador Folake Marcus-Bello, has thrown open fresh controversy ahead of the 2027 Ogun State governorship election.

Speaking on live television on Monday, the PDP chieftain and South-West women leader of the party declared that she is in possession of documents that contradict the Yewa origin claim of APC governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.

“Senator Olamilekan is not from Yewa. He is not from Yewa,” Marcus-Bello stated.

She said the matter is fundamental to the debate on who succeeds Governor Dapo Abiodun in 2027. However, she was quick to add that she is not opposed to Yewa producing the next governor.

“If what you have stated is true, Yewa has a better chance to produce a governor because they have never produced one,” she said.
“I am speaking authoritatively also on behalf of Hon. Ladi Adebutu. A real son or daughter of Yewa and we will support that daughter or son of Yewa. Let us get it clear.”

Marcus-Bello challenged the senator to a public confrontation, saying she has evidence from his father’s burial programme.

“Let him come and sit in front of me. We would bring the documentation that I have — the programme of event of his father’s burial with his Oriki and his progeny. His Oriki is in his father’s burial programme. Let him come and prove otherwise.”

She further alleged that Yayi’s early political career was in Lagos before he moved his ambition to Ogun West, and referenced his mother’s burial in Epe as proof that his family roots lie outside Yewa.

“The local politics of Ogun State is reserved for the indigenes of Ogun State. It is not an all-comers game. Ogun State is peculiar. We are semi-rural. We are not Lagos where people come and claim all sorts of things,” she added.

Marcus-Bello also questioned the process that produced Yayi as APC candidate and referenced what she called a book containing allegations against him.

Yewa Leadership, Supporters Defend Yayi

In response, supporters of Senator Adeola have rejected the claims. They maintain that he is a son of Yewa, citing his long-standing relationship with communities and traditional rulers in Ogun West.

They pointed to the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, who has publicly identified Adeola as a son of Yewa. The monarch’s conferment of the title Aremo of Yewaland on the senator has become a major reference point for his supporters.
