Nigerian Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has officially completed his transfer to Atlético Madrid, ending months of speculation and a prolonged transfer saga with Italian club Atalanta.

The 28-year-old arrived in the Spanish capital on Friday, January 24, 2026, where he underwent successful medical examinations before putting pen to paper on a long-term contract until June 2030.

Lookman, who scored 12 goals and provided 7 assists in 22 appearances for Atalanta this season, joins Diego Simeone’s side for a reported fee in the region of €60–65 million (plus add-ons), making it one of the biggest transfers involving a Nigerian player in history.

In his first public comments after signing, Lookman expressed pure excitement: “I’m very happy to be here. Atlético Madrid is a huge club with a winning mentality, and I can’t wait to start working with the coach and my new teammates. This is a new chapter for me, and I’m ready to give everything to help the team achieve great things.”

The move reunites Lookman with his former Leicester City teammate Caglar Söyüncü and adds a dynamic, versatile forward to Atlético’s attack alongside Julián Álvarez, Antoine Griezmann, Alexander Sørloth, and Ángel Correa.

Atlético sporting director Andrea Berta welcomed the signing: “Ademola is a proven goal-scorer and big-game player. His pace, directness, and ability to create and finish will make us stronger in every competition.”

Lookman becomes the latest high-profile African star to join La Liga after Victor Osimhen (Napoli → Galatasaray loan) and Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal → AC Milan), further underlining Nigeria’s growing influence in Europe’s top leagues.

The Super Eagles forward is expected to be presented to the media and fans at the Metropolitano Stadium in the coming days, with his debut potentially coming in the La Liga clash against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey tie later in the month.
