Ali Ndume Declines Akpabio’s Appointment, Mulls Future in APC

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has declined the role of Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tourism, citing a lack of relevant experience.

This decision comes in the wake of his removal from the position of Chief Whip of the Senate by Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio. Ndume’s removal is seen by many as a response to his recent criticisms of President Tinubu’s policies, which he claimed have worsened economic hardship in Nigeria.

In a statement made in his hometown of Maiduguri, Ndume expressed that his critique of the current economic situation should have been considered a patriotic effort to improve the nation, rather than a reason for dismissal.

He emphasized his commitment to consulting with his constituents on important decisions and reiterated that he did not seek the Chief Whip position, having previously served as the Senate Leader in the eighth Senate.

Ndume also addressed his political future, noting that he is evaluating the evolving political landscape. As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he recalled the formation of the party from twenty-two former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators and his role in its establishment.

Ndume stated that any decision regarding his continued affiliation with the APC would be made in consultation with his constituents, mirroring the process he followed when first joining the party when former President Muhammadu Buhari and incumbent President Tinubu pitched him.
